This book is intended as a homeschool or parochial school textbook, but it could just as easily be a volume any Christian picks up to better understand the forces, both sinister and benevolent, behind modern science and our culture today. Written by Dr. Dylan Thompson, Faith and Science for the Classroom: Atypical Topics approaches the natural world not as a sterile laboratory exercise but as an encounter with the artistry of God, a doorway into what Chesterton called "Modern Elfland," where scientific observation reveals the glory hidden in plain sight.

The book equips students to navigate territory typically avoided in both secular and Christian curricula: the relationship between alchemy and science, the spiritual significance of medical interventions, the theological implications of abiogenesis theories, and the nature of body and soul. Thompson establishes seven "First Principles" that govern Christian engagement with science, among them, that the material creation is not lesser than the spiritual, that Creation is simultaneously incomprehensible (infinite in its mystery) and comprehensible (ordered and knowable), and that Christians must not extrapolate scientific understanding beyond its proper boundaries (particularly across the Fall and the Flood).

The book is unabashedly confessional, grounded in a Lutheran understanding of Scripture as inerrant special revelation and Creation as God's general revelation — both of which, when rightly understood, cannot contradict because God does not lie. It warns against gnosticism, guards against treating the physical world as intrinsically fallen, and confronts the quiet dualism that has infected even Christian discourse about science. Through this framework, students learn to ask the right questions, to see signs and interpretations with theological clarity, and to approach the natural world with wonder, humility, and a craftsman's eye for the fingerprints of the Maker.
