Color: Please note that color reproduction can never be "perfect". The original work has been restored, and Ad Crucem relies on a high-resolution photograph of that restored image for this print. The colors shown on your screen will not be the same as the final print. Likewise, this print will be a little brighter and richer than the original because of the nature of the inks we use. The contrast is also higher, which improves fine detail.

Holbein made the main purpose of this piece to portray the New Testament as a more compassionate text than the Old; which is illustrated in the central area of this artwork. Man is placed between two symbolic saints (Prophet Isaiah on the left and St John the Baptist to the right) while the latter points to Christ as the Savior of the fallen race.

This work by Hans Holbein the younger is at the Scottish National Gallery. A few of the elements of this intricate scene, although quite simple to understand, are described in Latin at the lower portion of the print. (Source: thehistoryofart.org)
