Holbein made the main purpose of this piece to portray the New Testament as a more compassionate text than the Old; which is illustrated in the central area of this artwork. Man is placed between two symbolic saints (Prophet Isaiah on the left and St John the Baptist to the right) while the latter points to Christ as the Savior of the fallen race.
