My teenage daughter Jessica, wrote this prayer, an elaboration on the Lord's Prayer. I thought it might be a comfort for a sad day.
Almighty God, you created the heavens and the earth, the sea, the cosmos, and every living creature. You created all that exists, without you all would be void. Because of your mercy you sent your only son, Jesus Christ, to die for us.
Lord God, by nature every human being is sinful. We have no hope without your Son. We can do nothing to merit our salvation, and we cannot earn heaven for ourselves. For the sake of your son, have mercy on us. Grant us salvation, not through our own works, but through your great loving kindness. Forgive us for our sins, and help us also to forgive others for their trespasses.
Father God, we thank your for your bountiful gifts to us. We thank you for the wondrous earth you have provided as our home. We thank you for the trees, the birds, the fields, and the flowers. We thank you for the marvelous creatures that roam our world. We thank you for the creativity you gave us, and for the food that is provided for us. Thank you for everything that is profitable to us, and do not let us destroy it, but instead preserve the good gift of nature. Most of all, we thank you for sending your Son to die on the cross for our sins.
Lord God, we pray that you may provide for our every need. Give us the willingness and the ability to work, and keep us safe in troubled times. We pray for the wounded and the sick, please heal them of all infirmities if it is your will. We pray for those affected by natural and man-made disasters, comfort them in this trying time, and always. We pray that you will grant those working in missions success, and that you will grant those whom the missionaries are catechizing faith.
Almighty God, we know that we are mere humans, fallible and easily misled. Do not let our will be done if it will harm us, instead let your perfect plans be executed.
To you alone O Father, is all glory, honor, and might, with your Son and the Holy Spirit. In the name of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Spirit forever,
